Hujan Locale, Ubud

An à la carte heritage menu that does the work of three regional cookbooks — the most generous Indonesian table in Ubud at this price.

Editor's note

Two visits across late March and early April 2026, both anonymous, both bills paid. We ordered a third of the menu across the two evenings and would order the rest.

Hujan Locale has, by now, become the recommendation every honest concierge in Ubud reaches for. The reason is straightforward: it does Indonesian heritage cooking at a level that makes the price feel like a clerical error.

What we ate

The menu is à la carte and long. We ordered a third of it across two visits and would happily order the rest. The standouts:

A beef rendang slow-cooked for the canonical six hours, served with anchovy sambal and coconut rice — a textbook execution that tasted like an argument for the textbook. A grilled mahi-mahi with kemangi and green sambal — fresher than it had any right to be at this latitude. A vegetable dish of charred long beans with shrimp paste and palm sugar, which sounds simple and isn’t.

The disappointment was the satay course. It was fine. It was not memorable. In a kitchen this confident the satay should be the dish people fly in for.

The room

Two floors of warm timber, ceiling fans, a long bar, and the friendly small chaos of a kitchen sending out à la carte at speed. It is loud in the way an Indonesian dining room should be loud, which is to say full of conversation rather than music. Service is informed and quick.

In short

Recommended without hesitation for any traveller who wants one Indonesian dinner in Ubud and isn’t ready to commit a tasting-menu evening to it. Walk-ins are usually possible on weekdays; reserve a day ahead for weekends.
